On March 4, lifeboats were called in to assist a ferry which suffered an engine failure off an island near Rütergat.
What happened?
The ferry ‘Nordfriesland’ suffered an engine failure after both its main engine shut down near an island off Rütergat near buoy 14. The ferry with nine crew members onboard was enroute from Husum to Wyk upon Föhr.
After the engines failed, the crew members dropped anchor to avoid drifting on to the main fairway.
Lifeboat assists ferry
Eventually, the lifeboat ‘Ernst Meier Hedde’ from DGzRS station Amrum was called in to provide assistance to the stricken ferry.
The lifeboat was successful in taking the ferry undertow while the crew members were able to fix the trouble and the ship continued its voyage to Dagebüll with own power under escort of the lifeboat.
