  • Stricken vessel Modern Express is towed by another ship entering at the port of the northern Spanish city of Bilbao, Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016.
  • Royal Boatmen Association Eendracht will be using their innovative ShoreTension system to right the “Modern Express” so that unloading can start.

Couple of weeks ago, rough weather with monster waves shifted the cargo of wood and excavators inside Modern Express resulting in the ship to list and become unmanoeuvrable.  As the ship was destined to hit the french port last week, a tugboat company by name ‘Smit Salvage’ successfully towed the ship to the Spanish, of Bilbao.  This averted a major environmental disaster set to unfold, if the vessel had spilled its 300 tonnes of fuel on board while running aground.

The Koninklijke Roeiers Vereeniging Eendracht (KRVE) (Royal Boatmen Association Eendracht) will be using their innovative ShoreTension system to right the “Modern Express” so that unloading can start.

The vessel is currently awaiting unloading in Bilbao and KRVE assistance has been requested in order to achieve this.  The “Modern Express” will be held in position using six ShoreTensions, with the ShoreTensions  absorbing the vessel’s forces on the warps and compensating for the vessel’s movements.
