Finnish authorities have found serious safety deficiencies on the oil tanker suspected of damaging undersea cables in the Baltic Sea. The vessel will be prohibited from operating until these issues are addressed and repaired, reports Reuters.
Vessel Seized
The Finnish police seized the tanker, carrying Russian oil, on December 26th after suspecting it of damaging the Estlink 2 power line and four telecoms cables by dragging its anchor.
A subsequent port state inspection revealed 32 deficiencies in the vessel, including issues with fire safety, navigation equipment, and pump room ventilation.
Finnish authorities have prohibited the ship from operating until these deficiencies are rectified, a process that is expected to take time and require external assistance.
The ship’s owner, has criticized the authorities for publicly releasing the inspection findings before informing the company.
