Vessel Runs Aground Off Lisbon

2110

On March 6, a cargo vessel ran aground near the Bugio lighthouse situated in Tagus river due to an engine failure.

What happened?

The cargo vessel ‘Betanzos’ suffered a blackout which resulted in propulsion failure near the Bugio lighthouse at the mouth of the Tejo (Tagus) River.

Rough Seas

The stricken cargo vessel with ten crew members onboard was stranded and was left at the mercy of the Sea.

The vessel was subsequently dragged onto a sandbank for a distance of 600 meters towards the lighthouse.

Low tide plays spoilsport

The captain of the stricken vessel alerted the Lisbon port who in turn dispatched three tugs to the grounding site.

Attempts to refloat the tug was spoiled due to low tides and is expected to be refloated when the high tide begins.

The crew members were reported to be safe and no pollution to the environment was reported.
