Vessels Collide, AIS Switched Off

Container ship and a Russian frigate collide in Danish waters, reports AP News.

What happened?

According to Denmark’s navy, a Russian frigate collided with a container ship (Marshall Islands-flagged) off Copenhagen. 

Thick fog?

Weather reports show that there was thick fog on Wednesday morning, in the area at the time of the collision.

Collision area

The Danish navy said the collision occurred in the southern part of the narrow Oresund straight between the Danish capital and southern Sweden, and was on site with a patrol vessel together with Swedish ships.

AIS switched off? 

Reports suggests that the Russian frigate moved on with its automatic identification system, known as AIS, switched off that could have caused the collision. 

Injury or damages reported

According to the navy no one appeared to have been injured and no reports of any leaks during the collision near the Oresund link, a tunnel and bridge that connects Copenhagen to Malmo, Sweden’s third largest city.

Vessel anchored

It said the civilian vessel, Ice Rose, had anchored in Danish waters and that it had been “withheld …. until there is assurance of the ship’s seaworthiness.”

Russian frigate

The whereabouts of the unidentified Russian frigate was not known.

According to a shiptracking report, the nearly 145 meter-long frigate ship came from St. Petersburg in Russia and was enroute to Goteborg, Sweden.
