In a historic step toward greener ocean travel, Viking and Fincantieri have announced the construction of the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Libra. Currently being built at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard, the vessel is scheduled for delivery in late 2026. With a cutting-edge hydrogen propulsion system and onboard electricity generation, this development sets a new global benchmark for sustainable cruising.
Revolutionary Hydrogen Technology for Zero-Emission Cruising
The Viking Libra will be equipped with an advanced hydrogen fuel cell system capable of producing up to 6 megawatts of clean power. This will enable the vessel to operate with zero emissions, making it suitable for travel through environmentally sensitive areas. Hydrogen will be stored onboard using a first-of-its-kind containerized system, overcoming traditional supply chain challenges. The system will power polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells, designed by Isotta Fraschini Motori (IFM), a Fincantieri subsidiary specializing in green propulsion technologies.
This marks a significant shift toward clean energy solutions in the cruise industry, reinforcing IFM’s position as a leader in maritime hydrogen technology and furthering the global decarbonization agenda.
Expanding a Green Fleet with New Orders and Shared Vision
Alongside the Viking Libra, a second hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Astrea, is also under construction and set for delivery in 2027. Both vessels reflect Viking’s long-term commitment to sustainable cruising. Additionally, Fincantieri and Viking have signed a new agreement for the construction of two more cruise ships with an option for two additional units by 2031, all designed to meet the latest environmental and safety standards.
Leaders from both companies emphasized their shared mission to innovate and lead in sustainable maritime transportation. This partnership not only sets new technological standards but also paves the way for broader hydrogen adoption across the cruise and shipping industries.
