  • These ships are designed for Viking’s 12-day “Pharaohs & Pyramids” itinerary and feature elegant Scandinavian design.
  • Hon. Edward Herbert and Mohamed El Banna served as ceremonial godfathers for the two vessels, symbolizing deep ties with Viking and Egypt.
  • Viking’s expanding fleet in Egypt includes more Nile river cruises, featuring historic sites and exclusive access to artifacts.

Viking Cruises has named its latest Nile river vessels, the Viking Hathor and Viking Sobek, in a ceremony in Luxor, Egypt, at the company’s exclusive Reedport docking location, as reported by Viking Cruises. The event highlighted Viking’s strong cultural ties to Egypt and longstanding partnerships. Hon. Edward Herbert, representing a legacy of Egyptian exploration through his great-great-grandfather, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, and Mohamed El Banna, founder of Cosmos Egypt, served as ceremonial godfathers. Their roles honor a lineage of Egypt’s rich history and Viking Cruises’ ongoing commitment to immersive guest experiences along the Nile.

Honoring Historical Legacies and Egyptian Partnerships

Edward Herbert’s connection to the region honors his ancestor, who, with Howard Carter, discovered Tutankhamen’s tomb near Luxor in 1922. The Earl’s photography and journals remain housed at Highclere Castle, where they are now shared with Viking guests. Mohamed El Banna, representing Viking’s deep partnerships with Egypt, was recognized for his decades of contribution to the travel industry. He has worked with Viking for over 15 years, assisting in the company’s local operations and guest tours in Egypt.

Elegant Ships with a Modern Nod to the Nile

The Viking Hathor and Viking Sobek, like their sister ships Viking Osiris and Viking Aton, feature Viking’s signature Scandinavian-inspired design, offering luxurious yet serene interiors. With accommodations for 82 guests in 41 staterooms, each ship includes Viking’s distinctive features like an indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace and a square bow. Viking also announced that four additional Nile vessels will be introduced in the next two years, expanding its Egypt fleet to ten ships by 2026.

Exclusive Itineraries and Access to Egyptian Artifacts

Guests on Viking’s “Pharaohs & Pyramids” itinerary experience 12 days exploring Egypt’s historical sites, including visits to the Great Pyramids of Giza, the necropolis of Sakkara, and the Grand Egyptian Museum. In Luxor, the voyage continues with visits to the temples of Luxor and Karnak, followed by an eight-day Nile cruise. Viking’s collaborations grant travelers exclusive access to archives and exhibits at Highclere Castle, alongside artifacts like a 3,000-year-old Egyptian sarcophagus and Howard Carter’s Tutankhamen records.

Viking’s Recognition and Awards

With a commitment to luxury and historical immersion, Viking was recently recognized by Condé Nast Traveler as the #1 cruise line for rivers, oceans, and expeditions. These accolades reflect Viking’s dedication to offering unique travel experiences, allowing guests to deeply engage with Egypt’s ancient history while enjoying modern comfort.
