VLCC Tanker Caught in Storm Remain Adrift

VLCC tanker caught in storm, ordered to remain adrift, reports Maritime Bulletin.

What happened?

VLCC crude oil tanker was cruising in the North Sea, waiting for orders in ballast, since mid November. 

Tanker was caught in a passing storm while drifting.  

Damages reported

According to reports:

  • Bunker tank vents were torn,   
  • fuel spilled out onto the cargo deck, and
  • serious problems in the engine room. 

Shelter the vessel

Company wanted the master to drift and “wait for orders” to take the tanker under way and shelter. 

Tanker reached shelter and was berthed 3 days ago.
