Energy company Gasum and shipping company Wallenius Sol have signed a cooperation agreement under which Wallenius Sol’s dual-fuel vessels will join Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool as compliance generators, the company said in a statement.
The vessels will operate on bio-LNG, generating compliance surplus that can benefit other vessels within the pool.

According to Gasum, pooling allows shipowners to meet the FuelEU Maritime regulation requirements and avoid penalties, but the available capacity may run out before the end of the year.
“We are very excited that Wallenius Sol has decided to join our FuelEU Maritime pool, as this collaboration enables us to open even more regulation surplus to shipowners at this pivotal point. The window for securing compliance for 2025 is closing rapidly and the available capacity may run out before the year end,” said Jacob Granqvist, Vice President, Maritime at Gasum.
Wallenius Sol’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Rebecca Tagaeus, stated that the company aims to be “the natural partner for sustainable sea logistics in the Gulf of Bothnia and across the European continent.” She added that switching to bio-LNG for Enabler-class vessels demonstrates that the company’s roadmap is progressing and contributes to customers’ climate goals and the green transition in the Nordics.
Under the FuelEU Maritime regulation, shipowners operating in EU ports must reduce the carbon intensity of their fuel by two percent starting in 2025. Those who fail to meet the target face financial penalties. Gasum manages the pool and ensures that the required amount of bio-LNG is supplied to participating vessels, while DNV verifies that the pool remains in balance.
