- Wallenius Sol has taken delivery of the South Enabler, a next-generation RoRo-container vessel set to replace ML Freyja on a key European route.
- The vessel, part of Wallenius Sol’s acquisition of Mann Lines, features a methanol-ready propulsion system, ice-class 1A rating, and a 22-knot top speed.
- Built in Europe to the highest environmental standards, South Enabler supports sustainable growth in regional maritime trade and shipbuilding.
On June 11, 2025, Wallenius Sol officially took delivery of its newest vessel, South Enabler, during the ship’s westbound journey past Gibraltar. The delivery follows the company’s February 2025 acquisition of Mann Lines, a UK-based operator of RoRo and container vessel services. The under-construction vessel was included in the deal, and now becomes an integral part of Wallenius Sol’s growing fleet.
Fleet Modernization and Route Integration
Henrik Karle, Chief Operating Officer at Wallenius Sol, confirmed that South Enabler will replace ML Freyja on the route linking Tilbury, Cuxhaven, Turku, Paldiski, and Bremerhaven. With the vessel now en route to Zeebrugge for cargo loading, it is set to begin regular operations, while ML Freyja will be returned to its owners.
Sustainable Design and Advanced Capabilities
South Enabler has been purpose-built to meet modern emission and performance standards. Measuring 203.4 meters in length, the ship is powered by dual 7,200 kW Wärtsilä engines that are methanol-ready, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional marine fuels. The vessel is RINA-classed and ice-class 1A certified, allowing it to operate in harsh northern conditions at speeds of up to 22 knots.
With two dedicated vehicle decks, South Enabler can carry up to 197 vehicles and accommodate a broad range of cargo types including lift-on/lift-off (LoLo), roll-on/roll-off (RoRo), and high & heavy equipment, enhancing operational flexibility across Europe’s shipping lanes.
European Shipbuilding and Environmental Commitment
Constructed by Cantiere Navale Visentini in Italy and designed by NAOS Ship and Boat Design, the vessel flies the Italian flag. Karle highlighted the significance of building within Europe, noting that Mann Lines’ decision helped ensure strict environmental compliance and supported the regional shipbuilding industry.
“Now under Wallenius Sol’s operation, South Enabler will not only enhance our service capacity but also contribute to the competitiveness and sustainability of European maritime logistics,” Karle stated, underscoring the company’s ongoing commitment to green innovation and regional collaboration.
