Wan Hai Lines, a leading shipping company based in Taiwan, has officially named its latest energy-efficient container vessel, built by South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries. The new ship, WAN HAI A20, was christened on August 14 at SHI’s Geoje shipyard and is now set to join the company’s Asia–South America (West Coast) service, according to the report published by Offshore Energy.
Fleet Expansion and Green Advancements
Wan Hai Lines has strengthened its commitment to sustainable shipping with the completion of its 13,100 TEU containership series. The vessels are equipped with newly designed engines that reduce fuel consumption, while the final three units, beginning with WAN HAI A18, also feature wind deflectors on the forecastle to further improve efficiency. Each of the thirteen ships carries the “Smart Ship” notation, enabling real-time navigation data monitoring and secure transport operations.
The series began with the delivery of WAN HAI A07 and WAN HAI A08 in October 2022, followed by steady additions in the months that followed, including WAN HAI A17 in June 2024. With the final vessel, WAN HAI A20, now delivered, Wan Hai has completed this significant fleet upgrade.
Looking ahead, the company plans to add 30 more newbuild vessels between 2026 and 2030. Among these are twelve ships ordered in October 2024 from South Korean yards. Four methanol-powered boxships were booked at HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, while an additional eight of similar design were commissioned from SHI and Hyundai Samho later that month. In April 2025, Wan Hai Lines signed another agreement valued at $816 million with the two shipbuilders for four dual-fuel methanol-ready container ships, underscoring its ongoing investment in greener fleet development.
