Wärtsilä, a technology group, and Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 30 September 2024 to formalise their cooperation in in-service support for vessels under repair, maintenance, or retrofitting with 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines, reports Wärtsilä.

Enhancing Technical Capabilities

At the MoU signing event, Mr. Jos J.A.A. Goris, Chief Executive Officer, of Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions highlighted that: “This agreement with Wärtsilä further enhances the technical capability and enables our shipyard to provide a specialised suite of engine and propulsion solutions and services to serve the local and international clients safer, faster and better.”

Comprehensive Service Offerings

The MoU includes a comprehensive gamut of services such as:

  1. Maintenance and Repair Services.
  2. Specialized maintenance services, comprising of upgrade and eco-friendly reconditioning technology.
  3. Decarbonisation and retrofit programs include 2-stroke radical de-rating services and dual fuel conversions.
  4. Collaboration on engineering services and training as well as at Wärtsilä’s facilities within the Land and Sea Academy.

Focus on Decarbonisation and Hybrid Solutions

Wärtsilä will partner with Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions to be a source of information for ship owners and operators to discuss possible options for decarbonization. This includes, for example, feasibility studies into sustainable fuel retrofit and conversion solutions as well as hybrid propulsion solutions.

Support for New LNG Carriers

With this MoU, Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions will be in a position to enhance services for state-of-the-art LNG carriers. These vessels will be equipped with highly efficient dual-fuel 2-stroke main engines and 4-stroke auxiliary engines and will enjoy Wärtsilä’s know-how in marine maintenance, therefore requiring essential support and excellent service from its customers.

Importance of Collaboration in Maritime Transition
