In a landmark step towards greener shipping, Wärtsilä has been chosen as the electrical integrator for a major battery extension on the Wasaline ROPAX ferry Aurora Botnia.
The upgrade will increase the vessel’s battery capacity from 2.2 MWh to an unprecedented 12.6 MWh, making it the world’s largest marine battery hybrid system in operation. This project strengthens both Wärtsilä’s and Wasaline’s commitment to decarbonised shipping and sets a new benchmark for sustainable ferry transportation.
Significance of the Hybrid Expansion
Hybrid propulsion systems play a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by combining traditional engines with energy storage solutions.
The Aurora Botnia already operates with dual-fuel engines and biogas, but the 10.4 MWh battery expansion will further cut fuel consumption and emissions. Wärtsilä will integrate the system by delivering an Energy Management System, upgrading power drives, and improving control integration. The new system is expected to be operational by early 2026.
Wasaline’s Managing Director, Peter Ståhlberg, emphasised that sustainability is at the heart of the company’s operations. The partnership with Wärtsilä not only supports Wasaline’s goals but also provides a model for the global maritime sector on how advanced technologies can drive cleaner, more efficient transportation.
Broader Impact on Sustainable Shipping
The Aurora Botnia serves as a floating test lab for Wärtsilä’s Sustainable Technology Hub, enabling real-time advancements in hybrid technologies.
The ferry already operates carbon neutrally, and with the upcoming enhancements, it will further optimise fuel efficiency and minimise emissions. Wärtsilä’s President of Marine, Roger Holm, highlighted that the project represents Wasaline’s deep commitment to decarbonisation and demonstrates how collaboration can accelerate the maritime industry’s energy transition.
Additionally, the ferry is powered by four Wärtsilä 31DF engines, which are known for ultra-low methane emissions. By expanding its electrification capacity, Aurora Botnia reaffirms its position as one of the most environmentally sustainable ferries in the world.
The battery extension project for the Aurora Botnia marks a historic achievement in maritime sustainability. By creating the world’s largest marine hybrid system, Wärtsilä and Wasaline are not only reducing emissions but also setting a precedent for the entire shipping industry. This initiative underscores how technological innovation, combined with strong partnerships, can drive the future of carbon-neutral marine transport.
