- Wärtsilä extended its five-year Lifecycle Agreement with Viking Line for M/S Viking Glory, covering dual-fuel engines, LNG systems, and predictive maintenance.
- The agreement ensures performance reliability, reduces unplanned maintenance, and supports Viking Line’s decarbonization strategy.
- Both Viking Glory and Viking Grace benefit from Wärtsilä’s services, reinforcing their leadership in sustainable ferry operations.
Wärtsilä has signed a five-year Lifecycle Agreement with Viking Line to support the M/S Viking Glory, strengthening a collaboration that began in 2021. The contract was officially booked by Wärtsilä in Q1 2025 and aims to enhance the vessel’s operational efficiency while minimizing maintenance disruptions. The agreement builds on Viking Line’s trust in Wärtsilä, as the company already supports two other ferries through similar agreements.
The comprehensive agreement includes Wärtsilä’s advanced equipment, covering six Wärtsilä 31DF dual-fuel engines, six Wärtsilä Gas Valve Units (GVUs), and two Wärtsilä LNGPac fuel storage and supply systems. By ensuring scheduled maintenance and technical support, Wärtsilä helps Viking Line maintain cost-effective operations while supporting their sustainability goals.
Ensuring Reliability and Environmental Performance
Viking Line continues to emphasize the importance of operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. Mathias Sundberg, the Technical Manager at Viking Line, emphasized the value of the agreement, stating:
“We already have two ferries covered by Wärtsilä agreements, and we have been extremely pleased with the service and support they deliver. The Viking Glory is one of the most environmentally sustainable vessels sailing today, and by maintaining the equipment, we ensure the efficiency of its operations. The Wärtsilä agreement represents an important contribution to improve the reliability, and this helps us on our decarbonization strategy.”
The agreement’s scope includes maintenance planning, spare parts supply, and operational support. It also offers a ‘one point of contact’ contract manager, simplifying communication and issue resolution for Viking Line. Additionally, Wärtsilä’s Expert Insight predictive maintenance service plays a key role in enhancing asset reliability. By leveraging AI-driven analytics, the system can detect potential failures before they happen, improving efficiency while reducing costs and emissions.
A Shared Commitment to Decarbonization
Wärtsilä and Viking Line remain dedicated to sustainable shipping solutions. Henrik Wilhelms, Director of Agreement Sales at Wärtsilä Marine, expressed his enthusiasm for the extended collaboration:
“We are delighted to renew and extend our collaboration and support for the Viking Glory and to continue our strong relationship with Viking Line. Both our companies are committed to decarbonizing shipping operations, and these agreements play an important role in this. By ensuring the highest levels of operational efficiency, Viking Line can continue its great work in minimising the environmental impact of its operations.”
Both M/S Viking Glory and M/S Viking Grace operate between Finland and Sweden and are supported by Wärtsilä Lifecycle Agreements. The Viking Grace was a pioneer in operating with dual-fuel engines, making it one of the first ferries to use LNG. Meanwhile, Viking Glory is powered by the highly efficient Wärtsilä 31DF dual-fuel engine, recognized for its superior fuel economy. By maintaining these vessels with cutting-edge technology and expert service, Viking Line continues to lead in sustainable ferry operations.
