Wärtsilä, a technology company, has introduced a new radical derating retrofit solution called Wärtsilä Fit4Power to prolong the emissions-compliant lifespan of merchant ships by giving more optimised engines to the current two-stroke fleet.

Ship owners can lower the bore size of two-stroke engines by 25% using this newly developed retrofit option. Also, this will increase the efficiency of their current fleet, assuring conformance with Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) rules.

Last year, Wärtsilä 2-Stroke Services finished a trial installation of Wärtsilä Fit4Power aboard a cargo ship with a large-bore two-stroke main engine.

The findings demonstrated that using this retrofit option, a vessel with this type of main engine can save 2,000 tonnes of gasoline and decrease at least 6,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions yearly.

In 2022, Fit4Power obtained a certificate of product design evaluation from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
