Wärtsilä Leads EU-Sponsored ‘TwinShip’ Project To Drive Smarter

780

Technology group Wärtsilä is part of a consortium developing the TwinShip project, a groundbreaking system aimed at enhancing access to reliable data for smarter decision-making in maritime operations. Sponsored by the European Union (EU), the project will run from 2025 to 2028, focusing on accelerating the maritime industry’s shift towards decarbonisation.

Tackling Investment Challenges in Decarbonisation

While the maritime sector acknowledges the need for decarbonisation, many investment decisions are delayed due to a lack of accurate data on costs, performance, and emissions of new technologies and sustainable fuels. TwinShip aims to bridge this gap, especially for new ship designs and retrofit projects.

Key Features of the TwinShip Project

  • Decision Support System (DSS):
TwinShip will develop a DSS that allows stakeholders to plan optimal configurations of machinery, propulsion systems, and energy-saving technologies.
  • AI-Enhanced Analysis:
The system will leverage AI-based algorithms to process real-world test data, providing predictive insights to optimise fleet efficiency.
  • Pilot Demonstrations:
The project will validate its results through four pilot vessel trials, setting benchmarks for performance, cost, and emission reductions.

Industry Collaboration and Goals

The project involves over a dozen partners, including technology providers, shipbuilders, classification societies, ports, software developers, and research bodies. Wärtsilä’s General Manager, Anders Öster, highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving maritime decarbonisation:

“By working together under this project’s cooperative umbrella, we can make a real contribution to a decarbonised future.”

Alignment with IMO’s 2023 GHG Strategy

The TwinShip project will align with the 2023 IMO Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Strategy, aiming to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. By delivering reliable data and predictive insights, the project aims to optimise fleet efficiency, lower costs, and reduce emissions—critical steps toward meeting global sustainability targets.
