- NovaAlgoma Partners with Wärtsilä to Drive Marine Decarbonisation.
- Wärtsilä to Deliver Propulsion Package for 38,000 DWT Cement Carrier.
- Groundbreaking Methanol-Ready Cement Carrier to Launch in 2026.
The technology group Wärtsilä continues to lead the innovation wave in marine decarbonization by winning an order to provide a full propulsion package for a revolutionary vessel. This vessel is a 38,000 DWT methanol-ready cement carrier that will be the largest vessel of its type and the first with a methanol-ready notation, reports Wärtsilä.
Addressing Growing Cement Demand
“This highly valuable new entry demonstrates the Group’s fleet development strategy and aims to address the significant increase in cement demand,” says Vincenzo Romeo, CEO of Nova Marine Group. “This will be the largest and most eco-friendly cement carrier ever built and is a tangible sign of our strong efforts towards a green fleet. Having Wärtsilä as the technology and solution provider supports our fleet’s effective transition towards decarbonisation.”
Wärtsilä’s Comprehensive Scope of Supply
Wärtsilä’s propulsion package for the vessel includes the following:
- Engines: Two Wärtsilä 32 engines and one Wärtsilä 25 auxiliary engine.
- Propulsion Components: Two gearboxes, two controllable pitch propellers, and one tunnel thruster.
- Exhaust Systems: Three selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust after-treatment systems.
- Control Systems: Propulsion control system and two shaft generators (PTO/PTI).
- Additional Accessories: Engine accessory items.
The equipment delivery is scheduled to begin in November 2025.
Commitment to Decarbonisation and Innovation
Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine & Executive Vice President at Wärtsilä Corporation, commented: “Nova and Wärtsilä share a joint commitment to decarbonise shipping operations within the maritime industry. With this integrated package we are taking a holistic approach to the operation of this innovative vessel. This will allow us to support Nova with its sustainability goals around minimising emissions and ensuring the most efficient energy utilisation during operations.”
Advanced Engine Technology and Propulsion Efficiency
Wärtsilä 32 stands out for its excellent fuel flexibility, which allows easy upgradation to methanol operations. Designed for efficient maintenance and extended operating periods, it contributes to minimizing emissions.
The Wärtsilä 25 engine further supports these goals with its modular design and great fuel economy. Wärtsilä’s solutions for propulsion enhance efficiency further through innovative gearbox technology that slows down the propeller speed for a larger propeller diameter to maximize propulsive efficiency.
A Step Towards Green Shipping
Wärtsilä and NovaAlgoma are experts in propulsion and sustainable shipping solutions. Its commitment to advancing eco-friendly fleet operations aligns them with the benchmark set for innovation, sustainability, and efficiency in the marine industry.
