Wärtsilä has secured a contract to provide exhaust gas cleaning systems for two new Handymax bulk carriers to be owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha Nippon Yusen subsidiary NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers.
Currently being built by Oshima Shipbuilding in Japan, the 56,000dwt carriers will be the first vessels with exhaust gas cleaning systems installed that are owned or chartered by NYK Group.
Under the contract, Wärtsilä will also provide project management and commissioning of the systems.
Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled to begin in July next year.
“It gives us an inroad into the Japanese market for exhaust gas cleaning solutions.”
Wärtsilä Marine Solutions Exhaust Gas Cleaning director Sigurd Jenssen said: “We are pleased and proud to be the supplier of choice for these two new ships, especially as it gives us an inroad into the Japanese market for exhaust gas cleaning solutions.”
Using the Wärtsilä system, the new NYK BP vessels will be able to comply with the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) upcoming sulphur oxides regulations, which is set to come into force in 2020.
In May, Wärtsilä was contracted to supply its scrubber system for a new ferry, being built for Weidong Ferry at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea.
As part of the arrangement, Wärtsilä will supply a system consisting of two 13MW Open Loop V-SOx Scrubbers specifically optimised for the new vessel.
