- Wärtsilä commits to reducing Tier 1 suppliers’ scope 1 and scope 2 emissions by 25% by 2030, expanding its ‘Set for 30’ decarbonisation targets.
- A 2024 emissions baseline will be collected in 2025, with a tracking methodology under development.
- Wärtsilä has already cut its own emissions by 50% since 2021 and continues advancing zero-carbon fuel technologies like ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol engines.
Technology group Wärtsilä strengthens its decarbonisation strategy by committing to a 25% reduction in direct suppliers’ greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. This initiative targets Tier 1 suppliers and expands Wärtsilä’s climate commitments to scope 3 emissions, covering supplier-generated emissions from their own operations and purchased energy.
Strategic Focus on Supply Chain Sustainability
“Suppliers are an integral part of the total value chain of Wärtsilä’s products and services. Supply chain’s greenhouse gas emissions are the second-biggest scope 3 category in our value chain. Therefore, including supply chain emissions into our ‘Set for 30’ targets is the logical next step on our journey to shape the decarbonisation of marine and energy industries. By focusing on our direct Tier 1 suppliers, we cover 75% of our entire supplier base spend. Also, by working together with our selected suppliers on target-setting, we ensure the largest possible impact,” says Jan Kåre Helgeland, Director, Supply Management.
The 2024 emissions baseline will be collected from Wärtsilä’s Tier 1 suppliers in 2025, while a tracking methodology is being developed to measure progress.
Ongoing Decarbonisation Achievements
Since announcing its ‘Set for 30’ targets in 2021, Wärtsilä has made significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The company has:
- Achieved a 50% reduction in its own emissions since 2021.
- Adopted green electricity and low-emission vehicles to cut operational emissions.
- Developed zero-carbon fuel solutions, including ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol-powered engines.
Advancing Zero-Carbon Fuel Technologies
To enable a zero-carbon product portfolio by 2030, Wärtsilä has invested in fuel flexibility and efficiency research, leading to several industry-first innovations:
- The first 4-stroke ammonia engine solution for the marine sector in 2023.
- A deal to supply engine technology for the world’s first ammonia-fueled supply vessel.
- A 100% hydrogen-ready engine power plant concept for large-scale deployment.
Wärtsilä’s engines are already capable of running on low- and zero-carbon fuels, positioning the company as a leader in the marine and energy industries’ transition to sustainable solutions.
