Wärtsilä to Develop Next Generation Vessel Traffic Management System for Singapore’s Maritime Hub

89

Technology group Wärtsilä has been awarded the prototyping contract for the innovative Next Generation Vessel Traffic Management System (NGVTMS) by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). This project aims to revolutionize maritime safety and efficiency at one of the world’s busiest ports. Wärtsilä secured the contract in Q3 2024, marking a significant step in enhancing navigational safety through advanced technology.

Growing Need for Advanced Traffic Management

As Singapore continues to strengthen its position as a global maritime hub, the growing traffic volumes demand more sophisticated traffic management systems. In response, the MPA is spearheading efforts to implement AI-enabled solutions that enhance both safety and efficiency at sea. Following a thorough evaluation process, Wärtsilä was selected alongside other global leaders in April 2024 to contribute to this cutting-edge initiative.

MPA’s Vision for Digital and Green Transformation

David Foo, Assistant Chief Executive (Ops-Tech) at MPA, emphasized the authority’s commitment to driving digital transformation and the green transition in the maritime industry. MPA awarded the NGVTMS prototyping tender to three companies, including Wärtsilä, to develop the system using an open architecture and agile development approach. Wärtsilä’s expertise and innovative solutions make it a key player in this transformative project.

Wärtsilä’s Role in the NGVTMS Project

Over the next 15 months, Wärtsilä will collaborate with the MPA at the Maritime Innovation Lab 2.0 to develop a system that integrates data analytics and machine learning algorithms. This advanced technology will help identify traffic hotspots and predict potential collisions, enabling vessel traffic officers to manage increasing traffic volumes and complex scenarios safely.

Hannu Mäntymaa, Vice President for Voyage Services at Wärtsilä Marine, expressed the company’s commitment to redefining the future of maritime traffic management. Wärtsilä aims to set new standards in the industry by leveraging its expertise and state-of-the-art solutions to create a safer, more efficient maritime environment.

Wärtsilä’s Broader Maritime Expertise

Wärtsilä’s involvement in the NGVTMS project highlights the company’s strengths in alternative fuel engine management, fleet optimization, and simulation technologies. With its Vessel Traffic Management Systems already in use in over 55 countries and more than 300 installations worldwide, Wärtsilä’s dedication to innovation and sustainability aligns with Singapore’s vision for a smarter, greener maritime sector.

Conclusion

Wärtsilä’s collaboration with MPA on the NGVTMS project marks a significant milestone in maritime traffic management. By integrating advanced technology and shared expertise, the project aims to set new benchmarks for safety, efficiency, and sustainability, further positioning Singapore as a leader in maritime innovation.
