Wärtsilä To Supply Cargo Handling And Fuel Gas Systems For Five New VLECs

Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a part of the Wärtsilä technology group, has secured a major order from Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to deliver cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems for five new Very Large Ethane Gas Carriers (VLECs).

The vessels, commissioned by Japanese shipowner Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, will transport ethane from the United States to Thailand. The order was confirmed in Q2 2025, marking another milestone in Wärtsilä’s long-standing collaboration with SHI and Mitsui O.S.K.

Scope of Wärtsilä’s Supply

The company’s scope of delivery covers:

  • Engineering of the cargo handling and fuel gas supply system process plant.

  • Provision of sub-systems, equipment, and instrumentation.

  • Interface materials between the cargo tanks and hull.

  • Cargo control system for safe and efficient operations.

Additionally, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions experts will support SHI during vessel construction and commissioning, ensuring seamless integration of systems and smooth delivery.

With deliveries scheduled to begin in early 2027, Wärtsilä’s role in this project further strengthens its position as a global leader in sustainable gas handling solutions.
