Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a division of the global technology group Wärtsilä, has secured a contract to supply cargo handling systems for three new 93,000 m³ capacity Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs). These vessels, under construction at Hanwha Ocean Co. (formerly DSME) in Korea, are being built for two ship owners: a Greek and a Japanese owner. This partnership further cements Wärtsilä’s leading position in providing innovative solutions for cargo handling in the maritime industry.
Key Details of the Project
- Cargo Handling System Scope
- Engineering: Wärtsilä will provide the engineering, material, and supervision scope for the complete Cargo Handling System.
- Operational Performance: The system is designed to ensure optimal performance and safety in ammonia cargo handling operations, critical for the effective and safe transport of ammonia.
- VLAC Design Considerations
- Ammonia as Cargo: VLACs are designed specifically to carry ammonia, which has a high specific gravity. This requires reinforced cargo tanks and hulls, as well as a deeper draught when fully loaded to ensure safe transport.
- Increased Tank Capacity: These vessels will have a capacity of 93,000 m³, making them ideal for long-distance ammonia transportation.
- Wärtsilä’s Leadership
- Market Position: Wärtsilä has become the largest supplier of complete cargo handling systems for vessels in the VLAC segment, further strengthening its reputation in the market.
- Past Successes: Wärtsilä has a strong history of collaboration with Hanwha Ocean Co., reinforcing the efficiency and reliability of its products.
- Project Timeline
- Delivery: Wärtsilä’s equipment is scheduled for delivery starting in Q2 2025, aligning with the construction timeline at the Hanwha Ocean Co. shipyard.
Statements from Key Stakeholders
- Mr. Lee, Leader of the Basic Design Team at Hanwha Ocean Co., expressed confidence in Wärtsilä’s systems: “We have earlier worked with them and have complete trust in the efficiency and reliability of their products.”
- Patrick Ha, Sales Manager at Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, commented: “Wärtsilä Gas Solutions has become the largest supplier of complete cargo handling systems for vessels in this segment. We look forward to building an even stronger relationship with ship owners through this project.”
Future Implications
This collaboration enhances Wärtsilä’s portfolio in the growing market for ammonia carriers, supporting a sustainable future in ammonia transport, which plays a crucial role in the energy transition. The systems provided by Wärtsilä will ensure safe, efficient operations for these state-of-the-art vessels.
