Technology company Wärtsilä has received orders to provide replacement engines for two inland waterway tug pusher ships serving Paraguayan rivers. The ships belong to ADM Naviera Chaco (ADM), and the upgrades, involving new engine fitments, will be carried out at Asunción, Paraguay. Wärtsilä recorded these orders in Q2 and Q4 of 2024, reports Wärtsilä.

Improving Efficiency and Environmental Footprint

The Wärtsilä engines will reduce emissions considerably and enhance efficiency for the tug pushers. ADM aims to cut emissions by 25 per cent by 2035, and the addition of Wärtsilä’s cutting-edge engine technology will be instrumental in making this a reality in South America.

Raul Valdez, Logistic Director – ADM NAVIERA CHACO S.R.L., emphasized the benefits of the project, stating: “The Wärtsilä engines selected for this project have the fuel flexibility that we seek, especially as we look to the potential of alternative future fuels. At the same time, the project will help us to improve operational reliability and lower our maintenance costs.”

Vessels and Engine Information

The two ships to be used in this contract are the Decatur Lady and the Tendota. Both ships will each be equipped with three Wärtsilä 20 engines. The delivery of the engines to the shipyard was done earlier this year.

The Wärtsilä 20 marine engine is a light, compact unit with high fuel flexibility and dependable performance in genset and main engine usage.

Commitment to Sustainability and Decarbonization

Wärtsilä views this project as a reflection of the marine industry’s transition toward sustainability and improved efficiency. Hanno Schoonman, Director of Sales for the AMER region – Wärtsilä Marine, highlighted this alignment, stating: “We are delighted that Wärtsilä engines have been selected for this important project, which highlights the marine industry’s shift to greater sustainability and increased efficiency. ADM’s vision to be the provider of choice to meet the demand for low-carbon intensity feedstocks is very much in line with Wärtsilä’s own commitment to supporting the industry’s decarbonisation efforts.”

ADM’s Global Transportation and Logistics Role

ADM is a world leader in solutions from nature and has a huge transportation and logistics network comprising 2,500 barges and over 160 boats. The collaboration with Wärtsilä reflects its drive to modernize fleet operations and lower carbon emissions while ensuring operational reliability.
