Wasaline Achieves Carbon Neutrality With Biofuel And Battery Innovations On Aurora Botnia

10

Wasaline has signed a biogas supply agreement with Gasum and a FuelEU Maritime pooling deal with Stena Line, ensuring that its hybrid ferry Aurora Botnia operates exclusively on biofuels.

The vessel, which connects Vaasa in Finland and Umeå in Sweden, is on track to become a global leader in sustainable ferry transport reaching its carbon neutrality goal six years ahead of schedule.

Pioneering Green Shipping Technologies

The Aurora Botnia is designed for maximum flexibility, running on batteries, LNG, and bio-LNG. Earlier this year, Wasaline announced a 10.4 MWh battery capacity upgrade, and in January 2026, it will add another 2.2 MWh in collaboration with AYK Energy, Foreship, and Wärtsilä. This will bring the vessel’s total to 12.6 MWh, making it the largest battery capacity on any RoPax ferry in the world.

Creating the First International Green Shipping Corridor

With the support of the DNV-led Nordic Roadmap, the Vaasa–Umeå service is set to become the first operational international green shipping corridor.

The biofuel partnership with Gasum and pooling agreement with Stena Line also pave the way for other operators to cut costs under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and FuelEU Maritime regulation without passing extra costs to passengers or shippers.

Wasaline’s early achievement of carbon neutrality is the result of strategic partnerships, cutting-edge technology adoption, and a forward-thinking approach to regulation. By combining biofuels with advanced battery systems, the company is positioning the Aurora Botnia not just as a ferry, but as a blueprint for the future of sustainable maritime transport.
