Typhoon Meranti Snaps Cables of a Ship Under Construction
Crashed Vessels drift from cable equipment at Kaohsiung harbour
Typhoon Meranti termed as the strongest typhoon since 2010 battered Taiwan has finally made its landfall in China’s Fujian Province. The super typhoon with winds of 173 km/h (108 mph) caused ten ships to be pulled from their moorings in the Kaohsiung Port and crash into other vessels and harbour equipment. The cables which held these ships snapped under the force of strong winds and caused the ships to break loose and crash into other equipment’s in the Kaohsiung harbour.
A Taiwan made a container which was under construction crashed into YangMing Transport Corporation’s cranes. The Premier of China, Lin Chuan came to inspect the damages at the Kaohsiung Harbour and expressed concern that he has never expected the historical harbour to be subjected to such damage. Taiwan International Corp, Deputy Chair reported that 38 cables snapped at the newly on construction ‘FengMing’ container ship. The ship drifted due to tough winds and strong waves and it could not be rescued immediately and the paddle of the ship collided with the pier of the bridge. The preliminary estimates report the damage to services alone without the cost of replacing the machinery to be over NT $500 million.
Chen Feng, General Manager of Ship station has stated that they have encountered loss in revenue and the necessary funds will be allocated to repair the damages. He also stated that the damage to the ship will not have much impact because all the ships have been insured upon construction and the damages can be claimed through insurance later.
