A 100 ton ship which was used by the homeless people broke from its reins and started floating in the Sacramento river.
What happened?
The vessel named ‘Saint Joseph’ was shrimp vessel and was sold to a scrap dealer who tied it to a dock in West Sacramento and then later abandoned the ship.
The ship was declared unfit for sailing by officials and was utilised by homeless people who were living in the vicinity.
Breaks free:
The vessel was not removed from the dock, despite several complaints filed by the neighbourhood people. The officials conveyed that there were no funds currently available to move the vessel towards a scrapyard.
However, recently the vessel broke free and started floating in the Sacramento, heading towards the Marina.
Boaters stop vessel:
Since the vessel broke free on a weekend, it became a threat to boaters and property situated on the Marina. Fortunately, the flow in the river was less and vessel reportedly caught stuck near a tree.
The Coast Guard and other agencies rushed to the spot to assess the situation, however two boaters volunteered to tow the boat towards a Marina.
Hazardous material found aboard:
When the ship was assessed, the officials were shocked to find chemical containers, raw sewage and instance of multiple fires occurring on vessel. It has been suspected that the ship was used by the homeless for carrying out illegal activities.
The ship has been declared as a hazard and currently docked at a port awaiting further orders.
