Singapore is planting 100,000 corals in its waters over the next 10 years to shore up coastal defence, while also boosting marine biodiversity. The corals will first be grown in nurseries. When they are large enough to be moved, they will be transplanted onto existing reefs, or planted elsewhere to create new communities. Coral reefs act as a natural barrier against waves, breaking up the force of storms and protecting the shoreline from erosion.
