Bulkheads in ships are upright walls within the hull of a ship with the purpose to increase the structural rigidity of the vessel and dividing functional areas into the cargo hold, accommodation, etc.

They create watertight compartments that can contain water in the case of a hull breach or other leak. For this purpose watertight bulkhead is used on ships.

Marine Insight explains the construction and usage of different types of bulkheads including – collision bulkhead, corrugated bulkhead, plain bulkhead, etc., and where they are used on ships. The ship bulkhead also minimizes the violent sheer forces acting on the ship, that are generated due to waves.
