On March 21, a general cargo ship that capsized following a collision with a trawler has been taken under tow in the English Channel.
What happened?
The general cargo vessel ‘Britannica Hav’ collided with a Belgian flag trawler ‘Deborah’ 50 nautical miles (100 km) to the north-east of Cherbourg.
The seven crew members onboard the freighter evacuated their vessel aboard two life rafts and were rescued by the Deborah and were subsequently evacuated by a French Navy NH90 helicopter.
Freighter damaged
The freighter suffered damages and sustained a breach on its port side and four ot its hatch covers separated from the vessel and are adrift.
The freighter was loaded with 48 tons of light diesel fuel on board and a slight oil sheen was observed around the vessel.
A pollution response team has been dispatched to the oil spill site to monitor the situation and to contain the oil from spreading out.
Vessel taken under tow
The French officials issued a statement that the damaged vessel has been taken under tow and proceeding towards Le Havre by a tow tug hired by the owner of the vessel. The damage sustained by the vessel will be further surveyed and sent in for further repairs.
