1651

On May 6, two barges were engulfed in flames north of the Cochrane-Africatown Bridge creating a thick blanket of smoke over the Mobile River.

What happened?

The two barges which are not named were tied together and were assigned with the task of hauling old crushed cars. The fire started started onboard one of the barges and the fire crew members were frantically trying to douse the flames.

Thick smoke emanates

A thick smoke blanket engulfed over the Mobile River just off Cochrane-Africatown Bridge and it stayed put all of Sunday.

Teh State Troopers, the U.S. Coast Guard, Mobile Fire-Rescue Department, and nearby tugboats all worked in tandem to extinguish the flames and patrol the water.

None injured

Fortunately, no one was on board the barges when the barge caught fire and no injuries or risk of chemical pollution was reported.

A spokesperson said, “It was a challenging fire for crews to put out, these barges were inaccessible from land so what we’ve had to do is load our fire boat with fire personnel and then only a few guys onto the barge at a time to mitigate the situation and then swap out and rehab and recover.”

An investigation has been initiated by the fire officials to assess the situation and to determine the cause of the fire.
