On July 26, a fishing vessel sank in the waters of Permatang Damar Laut after it collided with the remains of another vessel.
What happened?
The fishing vessel ‘Xin Yi Yi’ with six crew members were enroute to Penang island when it collided with the remains of another vessel between Pulau Harimau and Pulau Kendi. He added that they were on the way in to Penang island to collect live fishes when the incident occurred.
The captain of the vessel alleged that the light from the buoy place at the site of the shipwreck was not working when the collision occurred.
Crew members
The captain and the crew members onboard the vessel were reportedly safe and were rescued by the marine police.
The Captain said, “I could not see the buoy as it was dark, misty and due to the wave, causing me to collide into the shipwreck. Loss is estimated at RM3.5 million involving the vessel, navigation equipment, live fishes and other equipments”.
Investigation initiated
The State Marine Department officials were deployed to the scene to investigate the incident and the fishing vessel is still at the site of the shipwreck. The authorities are taking measures to tow the vessel to shore.
