A video footage of a turkish coast guard vessel colliding with a stationary Greek patrol boat, near a pair of Aegean Sea islets, emerged on Saturday. The 2 nations were fighting over this for long and almost declared war on each other in 1996.
What happened?
Two videos showed the turkish vessel hitting the Greek boat near the stern. It’s not clear from the footage if the contact on Monday night was deliberate, resulted by mistake from a threatening maneuver, or another cause. But footage in one of the videos showed a downed pole or antenna on the Greek ship.
A Greek coast guard spokeswoman (speaking on condition of anonymity) confirmed the existence of the videos and said they were not leaked to Greek media outlets by the maritime agency.
Damages Incurred
Both the countries, Turkey and Greece claim territorial rights in the Imia Islets region of Kardak where the incident took place. Hence, matters worsened further. Meanwhile, a set of photos published on a Greek website focusing on military issues show extensive damage to the side of the vessel.
