[Watch] A Cruise Ship Crashing into Ketchikan Dock

2210

On Friday afternoon, the Celebrity Cruises’ ship Infinity crashed into a Ketchikan dock, Alaska.

High wind in the area might have caused the 965 feet long vessel to crash into the Berth 3 dock.  The vessel was seen to move in sideways to the dock, striking a set of pylons or “dolphin” causing the catwalk to collapse into the water, assistant harbormaster Dan Berg reportedly said.  Longshoreman and others on the dock were able to get off before the ship struck.

Harbormaster Steve Corporon said that Berth 3 sustained $2 million to $3 million in damage. That includes the barge that acts as a dock and two of the three mooring dolphins.

Corporon said the dock will not be usable until it’s repaired, which could take at least a month.  He said he’ll have a better idea after an engineer’s inspection this weekend.

The Infinity has been moved to Berth 2.  The ship’s crew is working on hull repairs, according to Corporon.

The Coast Guard will determine whether it’s safe to sail.  The visible damage was above the waterline and the ship did not appear to be taking on water or listing.  Witnesses and Corporon said they saw no indication of injuries.
