Despite warnings from the local coast guard, a giant bulk carrier travelling too near the shore ran aground on a reef off Mauritius, reports Splash 247.
What happened?
Panamanian-flagged vessel Wakashio bulk carrier ran aground on a reef off Mauritius on Saturday evening, while heading from China to Brazil.
The carrier was travelling too close to the shore, despite warnings from the local coast guard.
Safe removal
Booms are in place, and salvage companies are on standby to safely remove the 203,130 dwt Wakashio bulk carrier from its position some 900 m from the shoreline in the southeast of Mauritius.
Dangerous routing!
The coast guard’s efforts to contact the ship’s captain on Saturday evening to warn that its routing looked dangerous, was successful after an hour.
But when coast guard officials got through to the master, the captain insisted the planned route was safe.
However, after a few minutes, the ship radioed local authorities to say the vessel had grounded on a reef.
Because nobody else is reporting on it:

Probably the Wakashio.
Harbor is not on that side of the island.
Been there relatively stable since last night. pic.twitter.com/DzflhJoJGD— King of Hawaii (@CreepCoKG) July 26, 2020
