Editor Martyn Wingrove explains why shipping companies can learn a lot from Maersk Tankers’ investments in smart shipping innovations.

Ship operators could learn a lot from Maersk Tankers’ adoption of digital and electronics technologies. The Danish tanker owner has made progress with a digital strategy for fleet management and ship operations.

It helps having the backing of AP Møller-Maersk of course, but it goes to show what can be achieved in adopting smarter and more secure shipping operations. In that it helps that the whole group had to learn valuable cyber security lessons from a vicious cyber attack in June this year.

Maersk Tankers’ latest adoption of digital technology is the use of ShipNet’s mobility enterprise resource planning programs.

These cover procurement, safety, scheduled maintenance and stock levels – each of these can save money for the shipowner.

Maersk Tankers chief technical officer Tommy Thomassen said that having access to the right data will make managers jobs much easier and faster and more efficient.

Maersk Tankers were also one of the first in shipping to test airborne drones. In this case, they were used for sending parcels and document to tankers when close to coastlines instead of using small delivery vessels, resulting in more cost savings.

All of its tankers have VSAT on board for operations and crew communication and data services.

Maersk Tankers has worked with Sea IT to improve ICT networks on its ships and using data for equipment performance, fuel consumption monitoring and improving navigation.

All these innovations come from the top, as Maersk Group is also working with IBM on software projects. Maersk Tankers is demonstrating what can be done by using intelligent innovations for smarter shipping, who else has implemented these types of innovations?
