What happened?
On Aug 2, 2017, the container ship “Mercosul Santos” collided with a tug pushing several barges from the Bertolini company on the Amazon River, near the municipality of Óbidos, west of Pará.
Nine Missing:
The accident happened between the ports of Juruti and Obidios in the Para State at 4.30 a.m. There were 11 people on board of the pusher tug, nine crew members and two passengers.
To date only two of whom were rescued, nine went missing. An SAR operation by the Brazilian navy, the fire department of Santarém, the Fluvial captaincy and divers was under way. The container ship is reportedly anchored near the collision site with two half submerged barges stuck underneath the port side bow. It had been sailing river upstream to Manaus Port.
