[Watch] How Secure are Ship Networks from Cyber Attack

1592

Editor Martyn Wingrove calls on shipowners to invest in cyber security to prevent major ship incidents in the future.

How secure are your onboard networks? Do you know that your ships are secure from cyber threats?

Some shipowners will know the answers.

Others may have a fair idea and plenty will just shrug their shoulders and say ‘yes’ – but they probably don’t know.

Consultants are saying it is only a matter of time before hackers gain control of essential bridge equipment and cause some type of marine accident.

There are many potential digital threats the industry faces. There are probably just as many cyber security solutions out there.

So, which one is the best for protecting ships? It depends on what is needed and the sophistication of the ship’s network and connectivity.

A solution should start with training the crew not to plug in their own devices and memory sticks.

It should then include firewalls and antivirus software that is regularly updated.

Perhaps there are different solutions to securing networks?

There are plenty of cyber security issues and solutions. So, it is not acceptable for shipowners to hide their heads in the sand and hope it goes away – because it won’t.

Shipping companies will be under cyber attack, even if they are unaware of it.

Whatever the solutions that are chosen, shipowners must act – as anything is better than inaction.
