During a protracted drought and heatwave, the region has had to contend with declining hydropower generation and rising household electrical consumption.

Power restrictions went into effect for two days, leaving Shanghai’s waterfront Bund neighbourhood and portions of the financial district of Lujiazui, including the Oriental Pearl Tower, in almost complete darkness.

The city received criticism on Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter, for using electricity produced in Sichuan, which indirectly led to a power outage in several areas of the province.
