Firefighters deal with a major fire in a loading crane at Royal Portbury Dock in Bristol, reports itv News.

What happened?

Fire broke out in a huge crane on Saturday evening, 28 March. According to Bristol Port Company the vessel Thalassini was carrying grain for export. 

The Port said a piece of loading equipment caught fire whilst loading the ship. The ship Thalassini, carrying barley was unaffected.

More than 20 firefighters 

More than 20 firefighters were called out to tackle a fire at the Royal Portbury Dock in Bristol.

Temple Fire Station put out a tweet which said: “All appliances have been busy at Royal Portbury Docks helping multiple crews tackle a fire involving a ship loading crane.”

Crews from Avonmouth, Pill, Portishead, Temple and Kingswood fire stations were all called to the scene.

How was the fire tackled?

Reason for the fire

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze could have been accidental. 

Avon fire & rescue service spokesperson said the firefighters on arrival found a fire involving a loading crane with a hydraulic power pack.

Use of breathing apparatus 

He added the crew used four breathing apparatus for safety, and one 45mm jet and two 70mm jets to extinguish the fire. 

Tug boats and ship firefighters 

They also had multi-agency support from tug boats and ship firefighters at the scene, and a turntable ladder to deliver water.

There were no casualties reported and the fire brigade have now closed the incident.
