The article highlights some of the things passengers should never do when on a holiday. One particular aspect involves additional privacy when docking during a river cruise.
Cruises are a favourite activity of the older generation who enjoy seeing a number of destinations without the rigmarole of booking flights. Being at sea for so long also means remembering a lot of information when it comes to going on a cruise holiday.
Packing the correct items and acting in the correct way are all difficult things to remember.
Remember to close the windows
Passengers should always make sure to close their windows when the ship has docked.
Cruises, in particular, river cruises, travel through much smaller sections of water compared to the open ocean. This can prove particularly difficult for popular destinations when there are multiple ships, meaning lots of ships docked at one moment.
Travel writer Brad Crouch told, why making sure windows and blinds are always shut is important. He explained, “River ships on busy waterways tie up alongside each other at limited dock space, so guests have to traverse one, maybe several, ships to go ashore. Which means in the morning your ship may be moored cheek-by-jowl with another ship which arrived during the night”.
He relayed an embarrassing story of his own when on a river cruise on the Rhine. Without thinking to close his curtains, he “clambered out of the bed in the nuddy”. It was only then that he realized he was right next to another ship where he faced onto the busy restaurant serving breakfast.
Windows instructed to be closed during pirate attacks
Some cruise ships ask passengers to ensure they are shut to prevent pirate attacks when sailing through at-risk areas. This is to prevent any lights from shining out to avoid being targeted by pirates.
Last year, a cruise ship travelling from Sydney to Dubai imposed a ten-day blackout after the threat of a pirate attack. The 2,000 passengers onboard were not able to take part in onboard activities such as pool parties or outdoor bars and restaurants.
As they were travelling through dangerous areas, they also undertook pirate drills to learn what to do in the case of an emergency. Thankfully the ship managed to sail through the dangerous zone safely.
