Wilhelmsen Ships Service marked a significant milestone in Singapore’s journey towards a lower-emission maritime industry with the official launch of its electric vessel charging station at its Pandan Loop facility, reports Wilhelmsen.
Important Milestone
Wilhelmsen Ships Service has actively participated in the Coastal Sustainability Alliance (CSA) initiative over the past two years, collaborating with various industry partners to foster the development of electric charging infrastructure in Singapore. This effort aims to accelerate the broader adoption of electric vessels in the region.
Kjell Andre Engen, President of Wilhelmsen Ships Service, highlighted the importance of this milestone, stating, “We believe that transitioning from internal combustion engines to modern electric harbour crafts can significantly reduce emissions and enhance air quality at ports.” He emphasized that this initiative aligns with Wilhelmsen’s objective of minimizing its carbon footprint in maritime logistics and deliveries, and represents a concrete step towards helping their customers address Scope 3 emissions within their value chains.
Jan-Viggo Johansen, Managing Director of marinEV, Yinson GreenTech’s marine electrification arm, further underscored the critical role of infrastructure readiness in scaling maritime electrification. He noted that a robust charging network is essential to support the expanding fleet of electric harbor craft, including marinEV’s enhanced electric cargo vessel, Hydromover 2.0, and electric passenger hydrofoil vessel, Hydroglyder. Johansen added that these innovations, when coupled with smart, future-ready charging solutions like the newly launched station, pave the way for cleaner and more efficient port operations. He expressed pride in collaborating with Wilhelmsen Ships Service to assist maritime players in enhancing operational performance while progressing towards their low-carbon objectives.
The official launch event, which featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil the electric charging station, brought together key stakeholders, industry leaders, and customers who are committed to operational decarbonization efforts in the maritime sector.
