Wind Propulsion Takes Center Stage at SMM 2024 in Hamburg

104

The upcoming SMM trade fair in Hamburg is set to showcase a resurgence in wind-powered shipping, highlighting the industry’s renewed focus on harnessing renewable energy. This shift marks a return to wind propulsion, which dominated maritime fleets until the late 19th century.

Modern Wind Propulsion Technologies

Contemporary wind propulsion solutions now allow ship operators to effectively utilize wind power for both cargo and passenger vessels. Several mature systems have already been successfully integrated with fossil-fuel engines, enabling ships to sail using a combination of wind and traditional power sources. The increasing variety of available systems and the growing number of installations underscore the industry’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices.

Growing Industry Interest

The recent surge in interest in wind propulsion technology is evident, with more stakeholders from various sectors showing enthusiasm. The International Windship Association (IWSA) reports that small fleet orders are now being placed by shipowners, moving beyond individual ship deployments. By the end of July 2024, forty-five vessels had wind propulsion systems installed, with an additional ten wind-ready ships, representing a significant increase in installations over the past year. This growth is supported by the performance improvements in wind propulsion technology and the decreasing costs of installation and return on investment.

Industry Insights and Expectations

Gavin Allwright, Secretary General of the IWSA, notes that the wind propulsion sector has seen a flurry of new project announcements, order confirmations, and installations throughout the year. He emphasizes that the sector is gaining momentum, driven by favorable conditions rather than facing resistance. The SMM 2024 trade fair offers an ideal platform for industry professionals to explore the latest advancements and trends in wind propulsion technology.

Wind Propulsion at SMM 2024

At the SMM 2024 trade fair, thirty-seven IWSA members will be exhibiting, with numerous wind propulsion technologies and projects on display. To assist visitors, the IWSA has created an unofficial Wind Propulsion Route to guide them through the exhibition halls and related events. Attendees will have ample opportunities to hear from experts in this rapidly evolving sector.

The IWSA will host presentations by its members on September 4th and 5th at stand A3.108, with the full schedule available online. Additionally, Windship Day on September 4th, hosted aboard the tallship SV Peking, will be a key event, alongside an invitation-only gathering aboard the wind-assisted vessel EEMS Traveller on September 3rd.

Conclusion

SMM 2024 is poised to be a landmark event for wind-powered shipping, reflecting the growing adoption and development of wind propulsion technologies. As the industry continues to embrace this sustainable energy source, future editions of the trade fair are expected to see even greater advancements in wind-powered maritime solutions.
