WinGD, a Swiss marine power company, has finalized an agreement involving CMB.TECH, CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding (QBS), and CSSC Engine Co (CSE) supply ammonia-fueled engines for bulk carriers ordered by CMB.TECH. This collaboration follows the earlier announcement of the joint project between WinGD and CMB.TECH to develop the pioneering 72-bore ammonia-engine, marking a significant milestone in the maritime industry, reports Wingd.

 First Ammonia-Fueled Bulk Carriers 

The agreement signifies the groundbreaking nature of the order: these vessels will be the first ammonia-fueled bulk carriers and will feature WinGD’s first large-sized ammonia engines, built in China.

Solution For Decarbonization

CMB. TECH CEO Alexander Saverys views green ammonia as a pivotal solution for decarbonizing long-distance shipping, highlighting the commitment to sustainable practices.

Emphasis On Collaboration

WinGD CEO Dominik Schneiter emphasized the importance of collaboration among shipyards, engine builders, and partners for successful implementation, accelerating ammonia capabilities, and supporting decarbonization in the industry.

QBS Executive VP Gu Kechao highlighted the faith placed in their shipbuilding quality and the acknowledgment of Chinese shipbuilding capabilities in handling complex decarbonization projects.

CSE Chief Engineer Zhang Guangwei expressed honor in being the first engine builder in China to deliver ammonia-fueled engines and anticipated a significant market shift towards ammonia fuel in shipping.

High-Pressure Fuel Injection System

WinGD’s X-DF-A engines promise comparable performance and fuel efficiency to diesel-fueled engines, featuring a high-pressure fuel injection system and no aftertreatment for N2O emissions while ensuring Tier III NOx compliance.

Safety Approvals

Safety measures and studies, including HAZID studies and an Approval in Principle from Lloyd’s Register, have verified the safety equivalence of ammonia-fueled engines to conventional ones, ensuring safe operation and maintenance.
