  • X-DF-P Engine Set to Run on Both Ammonia and LPG.

The Swiss marine power company, WinGD, has come up with a new ‘pre-fit’ solution for its X-DF-A ammonia-fuelled engines that can also be operated on liquified petroleum gas (LPG). The offering is both for vessels joining the rapidly growing global ammonia trade, as well as for LPG transport, reports WinGD.

Flexibility in Dual-Fuel with X-DF-P Solution

The new product, X-DF-P, will consume LPG mainly as propane feedstock. This technology will be marketed once the first engines arrive on-site in 2027. The engine will be able to switch between LPG and ammonia, allowing operators to respond to changes in trade market requirements.

Ammonia Trade and Future Considerations

The X-DF-P engine has a specific focus on vessels that expect to engage in the burgeoning ammonia trade, which is likely to grow because ammonia is an excellent energy carrier for hydrogen transport. Thus, whereas the new DF-P optimized engine can be adapted readily to LPG, it allows operators to select the appropriate fuel as market requirements change.

Supporting Sustainable Shipping Solutions

WinGD Vice President R&D Sebastian Hensel said: “This development highlights our continuous innovation in support of smarter sustainable ship power solutions. Our X-DF-A ammonia engine is already enjoying wide uptake amongst bulk carriers and gas carriers; the X-DF-P offers a valuable intermediate step for gas carrier operators who are keen to participate in the emerging ammonia trade but are uncertain about the timing and impact on vessel engines and fuels.”

Growing Demand for Multi-Gas Carriers

WinGD has won numerous orders for the X-DF-A engine from operators designing multi-gas carriers, VLGCs, and ammonia-specific vessels. Its ability to run on dual fuel necessitates minimal changes in the injection system given the resemblance of the components required for both fuels.

Engine Sizes for Trade-Relevant Vessels

The X-DF-P package is optimized with engine sizes that best fit the vessels taking part in ammonia and LPG trades, preferring 52- and 62-bore engines. These are more common in vessels of this kind, so the solution is generally in high relevance for ships engaged in gas and ammonia transport activities.
