The inaugural WISTA (Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association) India ExCo Conference, held in Mumbai, focused prominently on the themes of sustainable shipping practices and achievements in promoting diversity within the maritime industry. This significant event coincided with India hosting its first-ever WISTA International Mid-Term Meeting, further highlighting the growing importance of India in the global conversation around these critical issues in shipping, reports WISTA International.
Stakeholder Consultation
WISTA International’s Executive Committee (ExCo) recently convened for a two-day meeting following the organization’s membership exceeding 6,000. Key discussion points included professional training programs for members, the forthcoming report from the IMO/WISTA Women in Maritime Survey, regional updates, and a detailed review of the equity fund’s strategies to support National WISTA Associations (NWAs) facing challenges.
Separately, WISTA India hosted the WISTA India ExCo Conference in Mumbai, themed “Navigating Change: The Future of Sustainable Shipping.” This event brought together local industry stakeholders, consulates, maritime leaders, and professionals to exchange perspectives on advancing the industry towards more sustainable and resilient maritime operations.
Addressing the conference, WISTA International President Elpi Petraki emphasized the potential of collaboration and increased diversity in overcoming industry challenges and fostering a more sustainable future for global shipping. She highlighted shipping’s inherent diversity in cultures, nationalities, and ethnicities, underscoring that a collaborative spirit is crucial for leveraging opportunities arising from current challenges. Petraki stated that continued collaboration is essential for women to effectively drive positive changes that benefit the global maritime community.
WISTA India’s Sanjam Gupta expressed pride in hosting the first WISTA India ExCo Conference and the WISTA International Executive Committee in Mumbai. She noted that the conference provided a valuable platform to discuss critical aspects of the industry’s green transition and to showcase India’s role as a leader in sustainable shipping, as well as the contributions of women driving this transition within the country.
