WMU Launches Global Research Initiative To Tackle Seafarer Abandonment

6

The World Maritime University (WMU) has launched a groundbreaking research project aimed at addressing the persistent issue of seafarer abandonment a problem that continues to affect maritime workers worldwide. Supported financially by Saudi Arabia’s Transport General Authority (TGA), the initiative highlights TGA’s commitment to maritime welfare, sustainable shipping, and the protection of seafarers’ rights on a global scale.

Investigating Root Causes and Strengthening Support Systems

The new research initiative will focus on understanding why seafarers are abandoned and the actions taken by stakeholders involved in such cases. Led by Associate Professor Khanssa Lagdami, a specialist in maritime labour law and human rights at sea, the project aims to study legal frameworks, institutional responses, and the effectiveness of support mechanisms offered to abandoned crew members.

The study seeks not only to identify where breakdowns occur but also to determine the key factors that influence whether seafarers receive timely and meaningful assistance. This evidence-based approach will help strengthen international protections and create more efficient systems for responding to abandonment cases.

A Collaborative Global Effort for Maritime Welfare

The agreement launching this project was signed during the 34th IMO Assembly in London, underscoring strong global support. The IMO will play an active advisory role, ensuring that the research contributes directly to international policy dialogue.

This initiative builds on WMU’s long-standing expertise in maritime labour issues and strengthens its ongoing partnership with the TGA. Previous collaborations between the two organisations have focused on maritime capacity building, policy development, and improving the welfare of seafarers. By engaging governments, international bodies, industry stakeholders, and seafarer representatives, the project aims to deliver practical and actionable policy recommendations.

WMU’s new research project represents a major step forward in understanding and preventing seafarer abandonment. With support from Saudi Arabia’s TGA and collaboration with the IMO, the initiative promises to deliver meaningful insights that can strengthen global regulations and improve protections for seafarers. Ultimately, this project supports a broader vision of a safer, fairer, and more sustainable maritime industry for the future.
