Australia’s Woodside Energy Ltd launched a feasibility study with four Japanese partners to explore the potential for a clean fuel ammonia supply chain from Australia to Japan, reports ICIS.
Project Research
The Perth-based company will carry out research into the project in conjunction with Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp, Marubeni Corp, Hokuriku Electric Power Co. and The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc.
Quintet’s Joint Statement
“Ammonia does not emit CO2 during combustion and is considered a promising next-generation zero-emission fuel for energy intensive thermal power plants and marine engines,” the quintet revealed in a joint statement.
“Given existing proven technologies for the production, storage and transportation of ammonia, it is expected to have early take-up as a zero-emission fuel.”
“Japan’s green growth strategy […] has also positioned fuel ammonia as one of the key opportunities for Japan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.”
Decarbonization Partnership
The collaboration follows last month’s announcement on the “Japan-Australia Partnership on Decarbonisation through Technology” initiative that was unveiled at a Japan-Australia Summit Meeting.
