The World Shipping Council (WSC) reports that it was strongly in support of the recently announced U.S. administration initiative to restore U.S. shipbuilding capacity via strategic public-private partnerships, employee development, and targeted incentives.
WSC Expresses Willingness to Collaborate with the Administration
“We want to work constructively with the administration on its efforts to revitalize the U.S. maritime industry,” Joe Kramek, President & CEO of the World Shipping Council, said.
“As we’ve said previously, revitalizing the U.S. maritime industry will require a comprehensive, realistic, and sustained strategy developed by the Administration and Congress and enacted through legislation,” Kramek stated.
Executive Order Seen as a Positive Step Forward
“The Executive Order outlines several encouraging elements that reflect a serious focus on rebuilding the American maritime industry,” Kramek noted.
Concerns Over Retroactive Port Fees Raised
“Given the direction of this Executive Order and the comments made by the U.S. Trade Representative earlier this week, the World Shipping Council is hopeful the USTR recognizes that alternative measures to impose retroactive port fees would disadvantage all aspects of the supply chain — from consumers to farmers, from energy producers to manufacturers,” Kramek added.
WSC Member Lines Perform a Critical Function in U.S. Maritime Industry
WSC member lines, consisting of both container and vehicle carriers, perform an important function in U.S. maritime activity. These carriers represent:
- 75% of the ships enrolled in the U.S. Maritime Security Program
- 65% of total seaborne U.S. trade
- Substantial shipbuilding experience and investment
Gigantic Economic Contribution by Liner Shipping
Liner shipping, spurred in part by WSC member lines, injects $2 trillion into the U.S. economy and provides 6.4 million jobs with more than $420 billion in wages per year.
WSC Offers Support for Industry Revitalization
“The World Shipping Council stands ready to support the Administration with constructive proposals to help revitalize the U.S. maritime industry,” Kramek concluded.
