A poisonous Huntsman spider was spotted in Hull after travelling 5,000 miles on a cargo ship and taking over a month to get there, says an article published in Joe.
Discovering the arachnid
The RSPCA was quickly notified after the spider, which can grow to have a 12-inch leg span, was discovered.
The spider was picked up on February 18 by the charity, which apparently deals with such creatures seldom.
Specialist rescue
A spokesman for the animal welfare charity said: “Insp Boyd collected this Huntsman spider.”
“He fancied a holiday so he hopped on a shipping container in China and ended up in Hull.”
“He gave staff quite a fright.”
“He’s now having some R&R at a specialist rescue centre.”
Giant arachnid
This isn’t the first time a Huntsman spider has arrived in the United Kingdom. Staff in Suffolk opened a shipping container two years ago to find the gigantic arachnid once more.
“He’d obviously been in the container for some time, without access to food and water, but he was still active and seemed to be OK,” RSPCA inspector Jason Finch said.
Excruciating pain
Fortunately, neither this month’s spider encounter nor the one from 2020 resulted in any injuries.
While a healthy adult human will not be killed by the Huntsman’s bite, it can induce terrible pain and heart palpitations.
