World’s First Dual-Fuel VLCC Starts Sea Trial

The world’s first very large crude carrier (VLCC) capable of running on both LNG and diesel has started sea trials off the coast of China, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC), the company that built it, says an article published on natural gas world website.

Features of new VLCC

The 318,000-dwt vessel was ordered by Chinese shipowner COSCO, and measures 332.6 m in length, 60 m in width and 30.5 m in depth. 

It is equipped with a WINGD low-pressure dual-fuel main engine. This engine and its generator have low-pressure selective catalytic reduction reactors, which should help the vessel comply with the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index Phase III and NOx Tier III requirements, DSIC said.

The VLCC can travel 12,000 nautical miles (22,200 km) in gas-only mode and 24,000 nautical miles using both fuels. It has type C LNG storage tanks.
